Laying and Maintenance Costs - Porcelain Tiles Compared To Stone

Will porcelain tiles be easier and cheaper to prepare?
Natural Stone Tiles, especially marble, are porous so once you've bought your tiles you may then need to buy tile sealant and wax.
This adds an extra preparation stage increasing the time/labour needed to complete your floor. Consequently, the finished-floor cost per square metre can be significantly higher.

Tiles - Water and Frost Damage

Does water and frost damage porcelain tiles? If a tile can absorb significant levels of water then it becomes susceptible to frost damage. Water freezes within the tile and expands. This weakens the structure leading to cracks and spalling.
Porcelain tiles have a very low water absorption coefficient compared to natural stone or many glazed tiles. Porcelain is a vitreous (glass-like) product that absorbs only 0.5% or less water.
Porcelain Tiles Are Water Resistant,
You benefit from a tile that can be used outside without damage from frost and is ideal for Bathrooms and Kitchens
Porcelain does not stain or absorb algae so it's an ideal low maintenance product.

Cleaning & Scratch Resitance in High Traffic Areas

Can porcelain resist abrasion and easy to clean compared to other flooring surfaces?
Porcelain tiles are similar to terrazzo in that the tile pattern is continuos through the tile unlike normal ceramic-glazed tiles that have a thin surface colour or pattern. They are an excellent choice for high traffic areas and will not need to be treated against scratches and abrasions.
Rubber scuff and aluminium chair drag marks may seem to spoil the surface appearance. This is only temporary and can easily be removed with proprietary cleaners and occasionally wire-wool.
